What Is A Domain Name? A domain name is the internet address people use to arrive on your web site. http://www. is part of an internet address, but is not part of the domain name you register. Domain names can be as short as 2 characters, or as long as 63 characters. A domain name can contain lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens. The words, numbers, and characters that you dream-up and use in your domain name are considered the second-level domain. The second-level domain is followed by the top-level domain, a period (dot) followed by a designation such as com, net, org, us, eu, etc. A domain name can be registered for 1 to 10 years. A good domain name is a name that your visitors will remember days after they visit your web site. The top three aspects of a good domain are:   1. Easy To Spell   2. Memorable   3. Speakable Many people are poor spellers. If they can't spell your domain name, they will give-up and go somewhere else. A memorable domain name is usually one that is made-up of one or two short, dictionary words. We recommend that you avoid using misspelled words in your name. Word of mouth promotion of your domain (web site) is important for success. A speakable domain name does not contain dashes or numbers. Numbers force you to clarify the spelling (e-i-g-h-t not 8 etc.). Dashes are hard to remember.
How Do I Find A Domain Name? DotCom (.com), .net, and .org have all become all-purpose TLDs though non-profit organizations still favor the use of the .org TLD. DotCom (.com) has been the dominant TLD for many years, preferred by both business and individuals. As a result, people tend to automatically end a web address by typing .com. This has meant that if you chose a .net, .org, or some other TLD domain name, you would likely lose a certain amount of your web traffic to the .com domain. However, change is coming. The lack of available .com domain names is forcing people to use alternative TLDs, such as .net, .biz, .info, and country code TLDs such as .co.uk (United Kingdom), .in (India), .cn (China), etc. As a result, web surfers are becoming more accustomed to remembering the entire domain name, no longer assuming the domain ends with .com.
